Bexley confesses: Penn wasn't arguing about money, he was desperate to post an urgent private letter before the roads closed. Purdie rereads the notebook with new suspicion — Penn was confirming something. She admits watching one guest closely. Edmund confides a vague "private matter."
No constable can reach the inn. Nell's checklist reveals Penn always filled his glass fully — yet it was found nearly empty, jug untouched. Iris's explanation is calm but she lines up her sewing tools anxiously. Edmund loiters near Penn's door; Vane's stick turns up outside it too.
Purdie introduces the full household: blameless Iris, anxious Edmund, dignified Vane, cagey Bexley, flighty Nell. Iris pales at one of Penn's old case-stories; a strange postage charge surfaces in Bexley's books. Iris asks after the post, then aligns her spoon — small, precise, telling.
Penn is found dead, ruled a heart attack. Purdie finds his precise dosage notebook — nothing amiss on paper. She notes odd tells: Iris awake late on the stairs despite claiming illness, Edmund's nerves, Bexley's evasiveness. P.S.: his water jug's untouched, though his glass is nearly dry.
